Qatar University’s (QU) Health recently held an awareness event to commemorate the World Kidney Day.
Students, staff and faculty from the colleges of Health Sciences (CHS), Medicine (CMED) and Pharmacy (CPH) participated in the event that included a lecture on “Obesity and Kidney Stones” presented by Dr Karima Boubaker, Nephrologist at Al-Emadi Hospital.
Dr Boukaber noted that obesity may be a risk factor for the formation of renal stones. She said: “The prevalence of nephrolithiasis has been increasing over the past half-century, in parallel with marked changes in dietary habits. Simultaneously, another untoward consequence of the changes in dietary habits was the epidemic progression of obesity. This temporal coincidence in the prevalence of obesity and nephrolithiasis led to the suspicion that obesity might be a risk factor for the formation of renal stones.” Also part of the day’s program was a visit by QU Health students to Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Center. The visit included a guided tour of the facilities, a dialysis demonstration, and interaction with patients.
During the visit, students had also the opportunity to meet with Dr Mohamed Amin Elesnawi, Nephrologist and Chief Coordinator for World Kidney Day Awareness Program at Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Center. Dr Elesnawi highlighted the importance of healthy kidneys. He said: “Kidney disease has become an epidemic. 1 out of 9 people suffer from this disease without being aware of it.” Commenting on the trip, CHS student Mayada Magdy Abd El-rahman said: “I would like to thank Dr Mohamed Amin Elesnawi and the nurses who guided us throughout the tour in Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Center. We were all impressed with the advanced tools, equipment and care provided to patients.”
CMED student Omar Jamil said: “During our trip to the Fahad Bin Jassim Kidney Center, we learned about renal failure and its treatment. This visit made me realize that good health is a real blessing.”
