QU engineering students showcase their design projects

Graduating students from Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) departments presented their design projects during the college’s annual Senior Design Contest on May 28. 8 teams comprising more than 150 students presented 60 projects to 30 judges representing some of Qatar’s top institutions and industrial companies. The projects were evaluated on innovation, commercial potential, sustainability, and presentation quality.

The contest was sponsored by Qatar Petrochemical Company (QAPCO), Dolphin Energy Limited and Occidental Petroleum of Qatar (Oxy Qatar). During the event, CENG dean Dr KhalifaAl-Khalifa presented trophies to sponsors’ representatives Dolphin Energy Limited director engineering Mr Khalid Al Khori, Oxy Qatar asset development manager Mr John Bolling, and QAPCO senior talent development officer Mr Hamad Khalid Al Jaber.

CENG dean Dr KhalifaAl-Khalifa said:  “CENG is proud to celebrate its students’ outstanding accomplishments and to encourage them to continue to excel in their respective fields.  The quality of their projects reflects the high level of the teaching and learning environment at CENG that prepares them for a successful professional life. We are also very pleased to have the cooperation and support of industry partners who are committed to investing their time, expertise and experience in our students”.

QAPCO managing director and CEO Dr Mohammed Yousef Al Mulla said, “At QAPCO we are fully committed to industrial-academic collaboration, especially through our investment in research and development and through the promotion of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. We believe it is critically important to support events and activities that promote engineering as it paves the way for generations to come”.

OxyQatar president and general manager MrStephen Kelly said: “Oxy Qatar has the pleasure to continue its longstanding partnership with Qatar University by supporting the university’s senior design contest.  At Oxy Qatar, we are committed to supporting education and capacity building through our social responsibility program.  This initiative shows the commitment by providing students with a unique opportunity to engage with engineering experts, and it also plays an important role in long-term national development, particularly among the younger generation of students in Qatar.”
